The growth in global tourism spending could be attributed to the increased accessibility of international travel. Since 1995, the total number of international tourist arrivals has more than doubled worldwide reaching an estimated 1.4 billion in 2018.
Europe has consistently attracted the largest number of visitors each year while the Asia Pacific region has grown to become the second largest market.
China has seen a huge increase in outbound tourism. It has the highest travel and tourism expenditure in the world, at AU$396 billion in 2018. In the same year, outbound tourists from the United States spent approximately AU$206 billion, while Germany came in third spending AU$134 billion on travel abroad.
